  • went home to Chicago last week for pat's sister's wedding. aside from the freak storm/tornado on monday, weather couldn't have been better. makes you love Chicago and take pride in what a great city it is.

pat kept saying - don't you want to move back? (he misses his cubs and bears) i do but then i really, really love my school and i really, really love the weather out here. i wish it were warmer in the winter b/c sometimes it still feels a little too cold to be considered california. however, if pat's uncle, a geology professor at purdue?, didn't remind me of the fact that california will eventually sink or whatever, i'd live here forever. people say they like having seasons...well, i think the bay area has distinct seasons...just no bitter cold/snowy winters. that's what tahoe's for.

i think what will move us back is the freakin high housing prices. if we do move back though, i think it'll be to the city for a few years...and after baby #1.5. but man, hcc is like a baby factory...crazy.

    go cubs gooooo...

  • are you green??

pat and i are trying to become more environmentally conscious.  has it caught on more in chicago?  or has it always just been a west coast thing?

we started recycling after watching al gore's inconvenient truth a while back.  and then we switched from buying water bottles to just using brita filters and reusable bottles.  then linda got me into buying grocery bags like these below instead of getting the plastic ones.  they're so chic and fun!  it's like another accessory.  i just got mine last week and used it for the first time.  i got a whole 5 cents back from whole foods for using it.  but it's less plastic bags cluttering up our place and the world.

and omg, the strawberries are so good out here.

RuMe bags - made in korea, they have solid ones too...these are my fav

envirosax - 5 bags comes in a little pouch and lots of variety of prints; linda has these

baggu - i wish i got these after i bought the envirosax.  just solids and some stripes, but fun bold colors.

  • well, linda beat me to it...but as she said...it was freakin 80 something this past weekend!! and now it's back down to the 60s.  brrr...  how quickly we get adjusted to the warm weather. (yes, i know back home is still cold but you would say the same if you were living out here now.)

so our place doesn't have a/c and it's usually not hot enough to even need it but it was sooooo bad on saturday.  it didn't help though since i was cooking for a dinner party.  inside temp of our place was 86.  the only relief was our trip to the grocery store to buy some ice cream to cool off.  haagen daaz makes chocolate peanut butter now.  yummmmm...  it's the perfect combination of sweet and salty.

i finally made an appt with the dmv to get my license and plates.  you can make appts out here!  weird.  i've been putting it off b/c i felt like then our move was permanent.  we still don't know but i think we're out here for a while.  the weather and scenery is difficult to beat.  pat and i have been frequenting the stanford dish - basically a 3.5 mi hilly trail that overlooks the bay area.  it's sooooo pretty with mountains, the bay, the trees and green rolling hills.  you just don't get that back home.  i've walked it several times and i'm still amazed everytime.

oh and pat's leaving Ggle.  sad....  no more free stuff after this month.  i love bringing back a lunch for the next day so i don't have to pack one.  teachers hate packing lunch...actually no one likes packing lunch.  but he's on to something he's been wanting to do - nonprofit consulting.  they work a lot with the gatesfoundation to help really good causes so i can't really blame him.

and i've never watched more golf in my life than this weekend.  trevor's son looks like a little leprechaun.

  • OREGON TRAIL!

remember that game?  so fun right?  well, no fun for our kids!  we're having our kids write lots and lots of diary entries as if they went on the journey west.  we've been reading books about other people's experiences to help them include details to make it sound authentic.

my coworker sent me a couple blurbs from his students...(i thought he was joking)

"... I NEED a fresh start.  My mom's an alcoholic, my dad lost his
job, and my brother just got out of jail a month ago."

" I am 11.  My sister Gendra, who is 16, looks as ugly as my father,
Gondrell... he is a gruesome man.  He smells like he never has taken a
shower.  I'll have to get a noseplug for the trip."

not very authentic but pretty creative.  =P
